Hand of God
Artist
Auguste Rodin
About the Project
Auguste Rodin’s The Hand of God is the central sculpture in the Centinela Hospital Medical Center Court of Honor. Rodin sculpted a large hand holding an irregular rock from which two figures emerge. The large hand emerges from a larger, roughly hewn block. The artwork may be read as a metaphor for creation, with the creator’s hand symbolizing a sculptor. The small embracing figures, possibly Adam and Eve, emerge from creative. Art historians have cited this piece as a pivotal bridge for Rodin’s symbolic and realistic artistic interests. This work is a bronze edition cast from a marble original.
About the Artist
Auguste Rodin was one of the most renowned and prolific sculptors in the world. Born in 1840 into a poor family in France, he briefly worked at Sévres Porcelain as a designer. He modelled in clay throughout his life. Rodin’s globally noted artworks include The Thinker and The Burghers of Calais. Extremely prolific, he created thousands of original artworks and editioned bronze sculptures in multiple sizes. Considered unconventional at the time, he sculpted partial figures that seem unfinished. Rodin, often credited as being the first modern artist blending traditional and modern approaches, died in 1917.
