About the Project
The Rogers Park Artist in Residence harnessed community creativity through public art. Shelley Heffler’s proposal was selected from the six local artists invited to the opportunity. Shelley invited community participation in her residency by uniting quilting with social practice. Titled It Takes a Village, all ages and skill levels were welcomed to fourteen weeks of free classes and independent study. Shelley provided materials and expertise with project assistant Dellis Frank. Twenty-one participants discussed making a village, then created forty-one linen panels in appliqué, collage and weaving. United in stitching, the arts helped rebuild community.
