About the Project
The most iconic 20th century building in Inglewood is the Forum. Once home to the Los Angeles Lakers, LA Sparks and LA Kings sports teams, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Architect Charles Luckman was given one month to design the fast track project. With frenetic work, the building opened with a spectacular New Year’s Eve ribbon cutting ceremony. Inspired by the Roman Coliseum, Luckman’s circular building seats 17,000 without internal support pillars. The Forum’s signature sixty-foot tall Romanesque arches are set off by a solid red wall.
The Forum hosted some 1984 Los Angeles Olympics events. Musicians from Cream, the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, the Jackson 5, KISS, Diana Ross, Steppenwolf to Barbra Streisand played the venue. A 2014 renovation by Madison Square Garden revived the Forum as a premiere concert venue.
The 2014 remodel was interior and technical, not impacting Luckman’s external form or proportions.
